Media institutes

If I want my magazine to become well known and have a chance of making it into the big market then I must find someone who will publish my magazine for me. These need to not only be successful in the magazine industry but also in the genre I am looking at. However I would not want the publishes of NME doing my magazine as NME are my main rivals and the publishes may try and make are magazines different so we are not competitors. However I have a clear plan where my magazine will go, although I don't want it to be the same as NME.
I have decided on a few magazines which are succesful and who have a similar style of music to me however are not really competitors. I looked at Bauer Consumer Media who publish Kerrang and Q, Jann Wenner who publishes Rolling stones and BBC Magazines who publish Top of the Pops magazine, however top of the pops is quite dissimilar to my magazine as it focuses on a different age group and different types of music also the BBC will only have magazines that are related to there shows and my magazine isn't.

I have decided that I would like to be part of the Bauer Consumer Media as I believe that if it had 3 music magazines all similar yet appealing to different social groups it would really take away the competition from NME and leave them out to dry so that I could become the biggest Indie music magazine.

Shots and angles

Extreme long shot
This is an extreme long shot.

An extreme long shot is taken from fire away. It is mostly used for establishing shots (however this is not useful for my music magazine), as it is either of an outside of a building or a panoramic view. This however could be used as one of the pictures in the magazines article to show a favourite place or some other view. This pictures obviously therefore lacks detail as it was to far way.

long shot

This shot includes the whole of the object which is focused and still quite a lot of the back ground. In this example the car is the object and the scenery is the background. lets as notice detail however also lets us see it in a bit of detail unlike a extreme long shot up.

Medium shot

The medium shot contains a figure from the knees/waist up, Any more than three figures and the shot tends to become a long shot. Background detail is minimal. This may be good for a music magazine as it lets us see detail and background as well.

Close up shot

A close up shot shows very little background and focuses mainly on the face. It is used to get detail into a photo. This may be used in my magazine but only as a smaller photo not as the main picture.

Extreme long shot

The extreme close up focuses on one part of either a body or an object. It is so you can look at a specific bit in lots of detail. This will probably to close for my magazine as it therefore won't let us see the style of the person.

Editing front cover!

The photo I originally started with was very similar to this one
As you can see the colour of this is dull and lacks brightness. I felt this looked unprofessional and would not attract a reader to looking at the magazine.

This is what my actual picture looked like after being contrasted and lightened. This gave it a brighter look made it look a nicer day and made it stand out from all other photos.

This is my final magazine front cover, I got rid of the bits that weren't needed as I wanted the picture to look simple so that you can focus on the musician. I rubbed out the table and it is impossible to see that there was ever a table there due to the fact that it had already been edited lighter. I also got rid of the hanger above his head as it look unprofessional and once again over complicated the photo as it was meant to be simple.

NME magazine analysis.

This is the front cover of NME 24th January 2009

This is the contents of the same issue

These let me look at another Indie magazine and see what codes and conventions are used in order to draw readers and make people want to buy it. It has helped me realise what I need to put in my magazine such as pictures related to text and big font for titles.
